Can I install Rocker Retainers myself?Updated 18 minutes ago
It depends on the kit and your experience.
| Kit | Who should install it |
|---|---|
| FA/FB Rocker Retainer Kit | An experienced home mechanic or workshop. The engine should come out of the car. |
| G16E-GTS or SR20 Hydraulic Lash Adjusters with Rocker Retainers | An experienced home mechanic or workshop. These are drop-in parts. |
| 4G63 Rocker Retainers | An experienced home mechanic or workshop |
| G16E-GTS or SR20 Solid Pivot Conversion | Machine shop only. Lash has to be set up professionally. |
Critical things to get right
- Clip fitment. The clip must sit tight on the rocker, especially at the bottom of the pivot, so it never touches the pivot in normal running. Watch the install video for your engine before you start.
- Check clearances before you remove the factory parts and again after installation.
- Keep the head clean. There are plenty of openings a clip or collet can drop into. Cover them.
- Check oil holes in the head are free of debris.
- Hydraulic lash adjusters (G16E-GTS and SR20): we recommend soaking the hydraulic lash adjusters in clean engine oil for 30-60 minutes before installation. Do not insert any objects into the lash adjusters, as this can damage the internal one-way valve.
- SR20: we recommend guide shims on both sides of the rocker arm, with guide heights within +/- 0.025 mm of each other.
